Arnica Montana Homeopathic First Aid Remedy

Arnica montana, the mountain daisy, also known as Wolf’s Bane is the most well known remedy in homeopathy, and well-deservedly so. I believe that if every household in the United States had this remedy in the medicine cabinet in various potencies and in the ointment or cream form visits to the emergency room nationwide would go down by over 30%. This remedy addresses so many of the traumatic situations that drive people to the hospital.

Just as an example of the marvels of this remedy, about eleven years ago, I witnessed a bicyclist being hit by a car as I was walking home from visiting a friend who lived down the road. The bicyclist was thrown over the hood of the car and landed in the middle of the street, obviously shaken up pretty badly. I went into the house and called an ambulance, and asked the young man if he would accept a homeopathic remedy for trauma. The remedy I offered him was Arnica montana 1M. To my surprise he was happy to take it, but he refused to get into the ambulance when it arrived. He just got back on his bicycle and went on home.  The next day he put a paper bag with home baked chocolate chip cookies on my doorstep as a thank you, with a note that he was feeling fine.

So Arnica is good for these types of traumatic accidents. In these situations the endorphins kick in and the person usually says he does not need help. When you hear this from someone who has been in an accident, immediately think of Arnica, as this is one of the indications for the remedy.

The Arnica patient has just experienced trauma and is wounded. He generally does not want to be touched or approached, as he is afraid to be re-injured, and is protective of himself. This is another indication for Arnica, not wanting to be touched. After an accident the person can wake up in the middle of the night with nightmares, where he/she relives the events of the accident. He/she can have a fear of sudden death.

I had a client who was riding her bicycle in Mountain View and was hit by a man in a pick up truck. She greatly benefited from a dose of Arnica 200C, and her description of the trauma that she felt is a good example of a situation where Arnica is needed

“What I noticed last night is that I have some pain on the side of the head. I feel some sort of confusion as though someone had taken me and shook me or hit me. I think I may be in shock. This morning I noticed that I have a pain in the right side of my neck. I also have a feeling of being cut off. My thinking has slowed down. I feel confusion in the head. I feel like everything is at a distance. I just feel separate, and the tiredness.

The advice people give me just confuses me. I don’t want to do anything. When I lie down it is not comfortable. The pressure of the bed on those parts hurts. When I lie on my left side I feel like my ribs are crushing me.

I am less worried about the physical stuff than the mental stuff. Fear is starting to set in. I told my son that I don’t want him biking to school anymore. Last night I was feeling angry. I need some sort of acknowledgment that it’s not okay to hit someone.”

Her description points out some of the key features of Arnica:

a)       Shock and trauma.

b)       Mental confusion.

c)      A feeling of uneasiness and restlessness in bed. The patient is forced to continually move. Staying in one position for too long increases the bodily soreness.

d)      Fear of being injured, or of loved ones being injured. Fear of sudden death.  Nightmares of the accident.

e)      A feeling of weakness and weariness of the whole body and of being bruised.  If you hear someone say that they feel like they have been run over by a ten ton truck think of Arnica.

f)       Joints feel sore, swollen and lame is another characteristic of the remedy.

g)      A peculiar symptom of Arnica is that during a fever, or from shock after an injury, the head will be burning hot while the rest of the body is cold.

These are examples of serious trauma where Arnica is needed in potency. Most people experiencing this degree of trauma would be taken by ambulance to the emergency room, where hopefully they would be given Arnica in high potency by the emergency room staff. Here is a list of situations where Arnica would be useful on a regular basis and emergency basis:

1)       Accidents: Arnica is the first remedy to be thought of for an accident victim. It works swiftly to relieve shock, allay pain, stop bleeding and promote healing. Arnica not only stops both external and internal bleeding, but hastens the absorption of blood and fluids. This means it can effectively reduce the swelling from sprains and other traumatic injuries. Reduced swelling means less inflammation, less pain, and faster healing

2)      Prior to dental work where there is an anticipation of pain or trauma give Arnica 30C the night before. This can greatly assist with tooth extractions, and root canals. It can also be administered afterward. Arnica will minimize trauma, swelling, pain, and bruising. I recently had a root canal and I just applied Arnica and Hypericum cream to my cheek in the area the dentist worked on. This took away any pain I had after the procedure, so I did not need to take an internal dose of the remedy.

3)      Prior to any kind of surgery I recommend taking a dose of Arnica in potency. For minor surgeries a 30C is sufficient, but for major surgeries, I usually administer a 200C dose.

4)        Bruises: Arnica should always be thought of for bruises. You are supposed to cover the entire area of the bruise with the cream or ointment, and put a gauze pad over it. This should help the bruise heal very quickly. It is recommended never to apply Arnica cream to open wounds, but to use Calendula or Hypericum cream in this situation.

5)      Head Injuries or Concussion: Arnica is the first remedy to think of for head injuries. When there is trauma to the head with unconsciousness, pallor, drowsiness, weak pulse, cold surface, and other indications of shock a dose of Arnica will alleviate the shock and promote healing. It can even help with injuries to the head that occurred many years earlier. This remedy is often followed well by Natrum sulphuricum for the chronic effects of head injuries with accompanying depression. If it is a serious head injury, I would give the remedy in a 30C, 200C, or 1M dose depending upon the severity of the injury and what potencies you have on hand. For minor injuries to the head, such as a baby rolling from the bed onto the floor, or getting knocked in the head by a swing, Arnica cream should be sufficient. If you still have concerns about the injury a day or so later, you can administer the remedy in the 30C strength.

6)       Sprains: Ankle sprains and sprains of other joints can be helped by Arnica.  It will take away the black and blue appearance of the sprained joints in a very short time, and relieve the lameness and soreness. Arnica should also be thought of for back and hip joint injuries with lameness and soreness. I would apply the cream to the sprained joint several times a day to hasten the healing of the joint. If the person is not on a constitutional remedy, I would just administer Arnica 30C in this situation.

Rhus tox is another remedy that can help with sprains. When Rhus tox is indicated for injuries there will usually be a feeling of tightness, tension, stuckness, stiffness, or cramping in the affected part. Rhus tox is also well known for the keynote symptom of aggravation on initial movement, and amelioration once the part or the patient is warmed up. You should consult your homeopath to see which remedy is best for your sprain.

7)       Muscle Strain from Overuse: I would apply Arnica cream to sore muscles that one gets from overexertion, such as doing too much gardening. Arnica can be used in situations where the person has never felt well since a physical over-exertion.

8)      Birth Trauma: Arnica is a good remedy to help both mother and child recover from the trauma of labor and birth. I remember when my third child was born he was not wanting to nurse right away, as my other children had done. I gave him a dose of Arnica 12C and he proceeded to nurse normally. I wonder whether rubbing some of the Arnica cream on the baby’s forehead would have reassured him just as well, and helped him with the birth trauma.

9)       Pregnancy and Labor: Arnica cream rubbed on the abdomen can help women who feel sore and bruised from the movements of the fetus. Also think about Bellis perennis for this.

10)     Injuries: Arnica should be administered in potency for injuries where the flesh is crushed and torn. It is also good for gunshot wounds, and for wounds caused by blunt instruments. It is better to apply Hypericum cream or take the remedy in potency for injuries to areas rich in sentient nerves, such as spinal chord injuries and injuries to the fingertips and toes, as it works far more effectively than Arnica in this situation. Do not apply Arnica topically to open wounds instead apply Calendula cream topically and take Arnica orally in potency for these kinds of injuries.

As you can see Arnica is a huge remedy that has a wide variety of uses. It can even be used in febrile diseases and in chronic complaints where its characteristic indications are present. Arnica cream is a very good way to get the healing properties of this medicine to work for you in first aid and minor traumatic situations.

  1. Hello,
I am sorry about your injury. Please consider taking a dose of Symphytum 30C or 200C. This is listed for retinal bleeding after injury.

    I hope you recover soon.

    Peace be with you,

    Deborah Olenev CCH RSHom (NA)

Is there any homeo medicine to clear blood in retina and restore central vision in left eye. Retina specialist said surgery is needed to clear the blood but does not guarantee partial or complete vision restoration. Car accident occurred on feb 24 and injury on left side of head and six fractures on skull. Gave arnica and also natrum sulphuricum 200c in June end.

  2. Dear Anand,
I am very sorry to hear about your son’s car accident. My suggestion is to give your son Natrum sulphuricum 200C. This is a very good remedy for head injuries. It is listed for blindness after head injuries. Please study this remedy, as it is also good for the emotional after effects of head or spinal cord injuries.

I hope your son recovers soon.

    Peace be with you,

    Deborah Olenev CCH RSHom (NA)

Vomiting and nausea are common signs of a head injury, though can also be from shock. One of the biggest issues in properly diagnosing brain injuries is that trauma symptoms are subtle. Many people walk away from a car crash thinking they’re fine when they shouldn’t have moved at all.

    • Mary on November 9, 2019 at 1:39 am

Cold can help with swelling and may shrink the size of your black -and-blue mark. It also slows blood flow to the area, so less of it ends up leaking into your tissues. When you first get a bruise, take a bag of frozen veggies or fill a plastic bag with ice, wrap it in a towel, and gently put it on the injured area.

  3. They have no awareness of stimulation from outside their body and cannot remember the immediate periods before and after the injury . Signs and symptoms of head injury . The symptoms experienced straight after a head injury are used to determine how serious the injury is. The information below is a guideline. Moderate to severe head injury

  4. Dear Shine,
It is more likely that you need a women’s hormonal remedy, such as Sepia. Sepia is well known for the weak pelvic floor, and it can also help with the umbilical hernia. For the diastasis it would be good to consult with someone who can recommend exercises to help you with this. Please do not take any remedies without understanding how to do it. I refer you to my article How to Take Homeopathic Remedies.

My daughter had a similar situation after giving birth to her first child, and Sepia helped her tremendously.

  5. Dear Ashw,
I am sorry about your friend’s injury to the left eyebrow. Arnica 6C, 12C or 30C should help, even Arnica cream would suffice to help with this injury. The cream should not be used if there is an open wound. Please read the article How To Take Homeopathic Remedies to learn about how I recommend administering the remedy, and about the rules of repetition.

I hope your friend feels better soon.

I hit my friend with my mobile phone which fell in left eyebrows closest to the centre of eyebrows. It’s been 2 days. Can I give arnica for healing ?. If so in what dosage.?

    • Shine on July 31, 2019 at 9:28 pm

    Hi Deborah,
I am 22 months postpartum. I have a diastasis, weak pelvic floor and a small umbilical hernia. Will arnica help heal this? Please advice. Thank you very much

    • Nahdia on March 25, 2019 at 6:23 pm

    Thank you so much Deborah.

I will stop Arnica and observe how things are going for two weeks. I still have very tender skull – specially the left side of the head is very sensitive along with light and sound sensitivity.

In the meantime, I will try to buy Aconite 30C.

Thank you so much again for you kind words.

    Nahdia

  6. Dear Nahdia,
I am very sorry about your accident. You have taken more than enough of the Arnica 30C My suggestion is to stop the remedy and observe yourself for two weeks to see if you are starting to feel better. If you are not feeling better at that point, it may be that Arnica is not totally homeopathic to your reaction to this car accident.

It may be that you need Aconite 30C. Aconite is very good for car accidents where the fear of death, or panicky feelings dominate. If you decide to take the Aconite, please read the instructions I give in the article How to Take Homeopathic Remedies.

I hope you recover very soon.

    Hi Deborah,

Thank you for all the useful information. I was in car accident Feb 20th. I have had concussion. Based on friend’s advice, I started taking Arnica 30 CH – 2 pellets X 3 times a day from Mar 10th. Continued for more than a week and now taking only once a day 2 pellets.

I am still having all the symptoms of concussion, including nightmares, flashbacks, mood swings, fear of death, sore head and body and lot more.

How long can we take Arnica? and what dosages? I am 44 year old. I am also using Rescue Remedy spray, when I am feeling anxious.

    Thanks and regards,
    Nahdia

  7. Dear Mousumi,
I am very sorry about your injury. A remedy that would probably be better than Arnica montana for this type of injury is Hypericum perforatum (perhaps in the 30C dose taken only one time).

Hypericum is an excellent remedy for injuries to the sacrum or coccyx, and for spinal cord injuries in general. The fact that you feel the pain in the lower back and pelis also suggests the Hypericum, because the pain extends beyond the site of the original injury.

If the Arnica is not helping, I hope that the Hypericum perforatum will be. I wish you all the best.

    In love and service,

    Deborah Olenev CCH RSHOom (NA)

    • Mousumi on February 14, 2019 at 7:57 am

Hi, I have slipped and fell on the ground on my butt 9 days ago but that time I did not experience any such pain. Now I am feeling pain at my lower back and pelvic area. Feeling uncomfortable while sitting or standing.. will Arnica Mont. 200 help?? Kindly suggest the proper dosage.

  8. Dear Rima,
Please do not worry. Since you took all the pellets at one time, the body interprets it as a single dose. Just do not take any more and evaluate yourself in a month. Homeopathic remedies work on an energetic level in the body, so you gave yourself a lot of the same vibration. This is not like overdosing on Western medicines.

I hope you feel better very soon.

    In love and service,

    Deborah Olenev CCH RSHom (NA)

    • Rima on January 15, 2019 at 11:54 am

    Hi.
I consumed a whole file(small one) of arnica mithe tinger. What shall I do now? I am very much scared after reading that a person may die of overdose of arnica. Please help

  9. Dear Susan,
I am sorry about your injury. My suggestion is to do what you did, which is to stop repeating the remedy. Now it is important to wait and allow the remedies that you took to work and unfold their healing. Please do not consider repeating the combination 200C remedy before two months. I would evaluate yourself at that time. If you are better there is no need to repeat. You would need to repeat if symptoms that had gotten better begin to move backward for a while.

I hope you experience complete recovery from this injury soon.

    In love and service,

    Deborah Olenev CCH RSHom (NA)

    hi
fell on hard stone steps.hurt my knees ankles back and shoulder. Only some bruising to knee. The following Day i took a single pillule of arnica rhus tox and ruta mix. the strengt of this pillule was stated at 200c. I repeat this every 6 hours but after 3rd time i decided not to have any more. What should i do now. Pain and discomfort has moved up into shoulder and other areas are sore but less so now.I have no visible bruising anywhere since i took first pillule
Can you tell me if i am doing right thing or not.

  10. Dear Joe,
I am sorry to hear about your injury. If the remedy you need is Rhus tox, then usually you will have an aggravation at the beginning or start of movement, and amelioration after the part gets warmed up a little. If these modalities fit your case, then you can take a single dose of Rhus tox 30C or 200C and do not repeat.

If these modalities do not fit your case, it may be good for you to take a single dose of Bellis perennis 30C or 200C, as this is very good for soft tissue trauma, and abdominal injury.

Please read the article on the website entitled How To Take Homeopathic Remedies. Here is the link:

I hope you feel better soon.

    Dear Dr Deborah Olenev ,

Hi i was in gym doing dumbbell lifting with my left arm. During my last repetition of workout, i was not able to lift the dumbbell, so i used my left abdomen muscles to aid my left arm biceps during the last repetition. In summary that was improper lifting/workout, and improper use of abdomen muscle. From that time i am having pain and tenderness in the left abdomen. A clinical exam by doctor revealed a pressure from small spot on left abdomen but no bulge during straining/coughing. A US scan, revealed “left omental direct inguinal hernia, on Valsalva maneuver, bowel loops not protruded and appear normal”. So in summary i suspect what i am having is a muscle tear/strain with a small hernia (only tiny fatty tissue poking out through tear during straining)

what should i take for reducing pain? i am taking now arnica 30c for 1 month but there is not much relief.
can i take arnica 200c or Bellis Perennis 200c or rhus tox 200c or some other medicine for relieving pain?
A google search showed that rhus tox 200 can be used as a remedy for hernia which comes suddenly or due to over lifting/straining”

Many thanks for this website as its very use full for general populace to learn about homeopathy.

    Best Regards,
    joe

  11. Dear Dinesh,
Thank you for writing with the question about your wife’s painful left foot. My suggestion is not to give her Arnica 1M as that is a very high potency of the remedy. It is especially not wise to use such a high potency, when you are not 100% sure of the source of the problem.

Pain in the left foot is a symptom listed under 222 remedies, most of which are constitutional remedies. Unless you are 100% sure that the pain is a result of an injury, I would not prescribe Arnica for this. I would suggest seeing a homeopath who can take your wife’s complete case to see what remedy covers the totality of her symptoms.

I hope that your wife recovers soon for her foot injury.

    In love and service,

    Deborah Olenev CCH RSHom (NA)

    Respected sir
My wife have problem in left foot, don’t know is it sprain or other. She has pain and have swelling for last one year. In x-ray does not com any thing. Some doctor say sprain some says calcium deficiency. Should I give her arnica Montana 1m.
    Thankyou

  12. Dear Davina,
I am sorry about your dog’s accident. Arnica 6C, 12C or 30C would be excellent for your dog. Arnica does control bruising, and internal bleeding. It also helps with shock and trauma. This should benefit your dog. Please read the article on this website on How To Take Homeopathic Remedies to learn about the rules of repetition.

Medical doctors often do not know about the beauty of homeopathy, and this wonderful healing system. They often respond with fear and prejudice. Arnica is a tried and true remedy for trauma, such as what your dog has suffered, and it should help her.

Later on she may need a dose of Symphytum, and possibly Ruta, and even Rhus tox to complete her cure from this accident, but I would not rush to change the remedies. Let each remedy have time to work uninterrupted.

I hope your dog feels better very soon.

    In love and service,

    Deborah Olenev CCH RSHom (NA)

    Hi
I was wondering if you advise me, I have heard arnica is safe for dogs, as I have just picked up my young 1year old husky from the vets, she was hit by a car last Staurday and has extensive fractures in her shoulder & one in her hind leg also some lasserations to her hock, one is a bit infected she had internal bleeding which they don’t seem to be too worried about now but is still evidence of it, they haven’t decided to operate as the shoulder is well protected by mussel. I asked for arnica to be given orally to help with the shock & bruseing but they said they stopped because it could effect the internal bleeding & cause it & make it worse.
I thought arnica was good for internal bleeding? At the moment I have Arnica 6c & have just bought weleda Arnica Symphytum Comp, but now I am unsure wether to give it to her with out dong a bit of my own research & contacting people who are in the know.
    Hoping you can advice.
    With Thanks
    From Davina
ps not sure if I have to get back on this website to recieve the reply or wether you’ll email me direct?

  13. Dear Ashish,
Thank you for writing. I am sorry about the injury you had to your calf muscle while playing tennis. The remedy I would usually recommend for that type of injury is Ruta graveolens, as this is the main remedy for injuries to ligaments and tendons, though other remedies could also be indicated, such as Rhus toxicodendron. If Rhus tox is indicated the patient usually has aggravation from initial motion and amelioration as the part gets warmed up. If I were to prescribe either of these remedies I would give you a single dose of the 30C strength, and not repeat. A single dose of a 30C should hold ten to twelve weeks on average, though it can hold much longer before needing to be repeated. You would only repeat the remedy is symptoms that got better moved backward for a week or so.

The homeopath you are working with is repeating the 1M of Arnica way too often. A single dose of a 1M strength remedy should hold six months to many years. It is not appropriate to repeat such a strength, or any strength for that matter, indiscriminately and frequently.

Please read the article on this website entitled: How to Take Homeopathic Remedies to learn about the rules of repetition of remedies and the way I recommend taking them.

I hope you feel better soon.

    In love and service,

    Deborah

My age is 43 Yrs and have Chronic disease of Osteo Arthritis.
I got cramp in my muscle calf 2 months back while playing badminton for long duration that day. I was told by sports instructor to consume Oral Rehradation Salt (ORS) in powder form with water for 3-5 days along with SUMO tablet. It gave me relief temporarily for few days about 80%. When I returned back to sports again after 10 days. My pain recurred severely. after taking some precautions through naturapathy, last month I showed to General Physician. He told me that my muscle got torned partially inside in the area of Achilles Tendons. He gave me medicine but did not heal much.

10 days back I have come across homeopathic doctor. He prescribed me Arnica Montana 1M, before confirming Arnica with 1 M potency he also checked with Arnica M 200c on me. But I confirmed that 200c potency did not give me an effect. Now last 10 days I am taking Arnica Montana 1M in the gap of 1-2 days. But I am not feeling much relief. Please could you advice treatment to heal my calf muscle. Is Arnica Mont. 1 M is advisable for longer duration (I mean for more than a month or two) as I have heard that Arnica has side effects and toxins to Liver as well as could impact heart.
    Thank you very Much !
    regards,
    Ashish

  14. Dear Cate,
Thank you for writing with your question about your husband and whether you should repeat the Arnica. You did not indicate what strength of Arnica you gave him, but I am guessing that it was a 30C or a 200C. If that is the case, I would not repeat the remedy, as you never want to interrupt a dose that is active. What I would do in this case is allow the remedy to work uninterrupted and then evaluate him in seven weeks.

At that time, I would make a chart of his symptoms and determine what symptoms are better, the same, worse, old or new. I would not repeat the remedy unless symptoms that were in the better category moved backward for two weeks. By doing it this way, you give the Arnica dose that he took the time it needs to work on his symptoms and you do not interrupt an active dose.

I would definitely not go to the 1M or 10M of the remedy. This is way too strong for someone with the health problems that you are reporting.I would stick to the 30C and below for your husband.

Please read the article on my website titled: How to Take Homeopathic Remedies to learn how I administer and prescribe remedies.

I hope your husband feels better soon, and I wish you success in your homeopathic studies.

    In love and service,

    Deborah

My husband had a concussion as a teenager, and was hospitalized for a week or two. More recently, he developed hyponatremia and fell, hitting his head on the ground, maybe more than once…ended up with subdural hematomas and neurosurgery, two or three years ago. Since that time, has developed a-fib and congestive heart failure and emphysema. I am a student of homeopathy, did a lot of reading, and gave him arnica dissolved in water, a tsp three times one day and twice the next day. I was told that the bottle has to be discarded after @24 hours. He has had a lot of symptoms, the ones I was concentrating on as most important may be improving, it is hard to determine precisely. I wonder if it is better to wait and see, or should I give him more arnica 1M? or go to 10M? Waiting is the least hazardous course, but I want him to be able to do better as soon as possible. PS. He had responded well to Am Carb 200C, single dose, every few weeks, several times earlier this year. Obviously not a cure, but the lower leg swelling and weight gain are kept under control with it.

  15. Dear Jai,
Thank you for writing with your question. I am sorry about the sprain that you have, and I hope that you recover very soon. The remedies that you were prescribed are reasonable to consider for sprains, but the approach is not a classical homeopathic approach, which means one remedy at a time chosen according to similarity with the patient’s symptoms.

I generally would prescribe one remedy at a time and observe the response, and I do not repeat the remedy, unless symptoms that got better moved backward for a while. It sounds like you have been taking the remedies in combination and too frequently. I would recommend pausing for three to four weeks. When you repeat so frequently you keep yourself in initial reaction mode and do not allow the healing process on the remedy to properly unfold.

After four weeks, you can see what symptoms you are having and select a remedy that matches the symptoms. If you are feeling better at four weeks, you should not take anything, because that means the healing process is unfolding and you do not want to interrupt it. You would only repeat the remedy, if symptoms that had been better move backward for a while.

I hope you recover soon from your injury.

    In love and service,

    Deborah Olenev CCH RSHom (NA)

last year , i was diagnosed with sprain At Adductor muscles origins,at right superior & inferior pubic rami. The doctor told to rest completely for months for it to heal, but i didn’t stop and played football,as it was my last college year.now i have been resting for 3 months, and the situation seems worse, because even if i move a little it pains…
i consulted our homeopathic doctor, who treated my rheumatoid arthritis.
he told me to take arnica montana 200.after taking it one month,it didnt show any effect,so he prescribed me arnica montana-Q for 10 days(10 drops 4 times a day) starting from today. Another doctor said me to take-
    day 1 to day 3
    Phosphorus 30 twice a day.

    day 4 to day 20

the following remedies twice a day at a time

    arnica 30
    rhus tox 30
    bellis per 30
    ruta 30

One dose of each remedy means 2 pills.
i just want to ask if he is going the right way with these,i don’t doubt his abilities as a doctor, just want to know any advice or suggestions from your side.i really need to get healed as my career is on the line

  16. May I just say what a comfort to find someone who truly understands what they are talking
about on the web. You definitely understand how to bring a problem to light
and make it important. A lot more people ought to check this
out and understand this side of the story. It’s surprising you’re not more popular because you surely have the gift.

  17. I really like this site and Arnica Montana – Homeopathic First Aid Remedy | Homeopathy for Health . I read about you on another site I found on Yahoo and thought they had great views as well.

  18. I am shocked to be writing a comment on any post, but this one was so easy to read and right on with your points, I had to write! You should be writer of the year with this one!
