Rhus toxicodendron Homeopathic First Aid Remedy

If I were told that I could limit my home remedy kit to only five remedies, I would be sure that Rhus toxicodendron Homeopathic First Aid Remedy (or Rhus tox) were one of the five. I prescribe this remedy to more clients than any other. This is a constitutional remedy, an acute remedy and a trauma remedy of vast usefulness. Rhus tox may complete the cure itself, or need to be followed by other constitutional remedies once the trauma or acute layer has been addressed.

In Sankaran’s system of miasms it falls into the typhoid miasm. People needing remedies from this miasm have a feeling that they are in a crisis situation, and need to make a great effort to pull out of it. I would like to present a few snapshot pictures of clients I have had who responded beautifully to the remedy, so that you can develop a picture of your own of the usefulness of this remedy and its therapeutic range.

Client 1. This is a woman in her forties who recently had surgery to remove a ganglion cyst. The surgeon also removed a tiny pain nerve in her wrist and now she fears that she may have complex regional pain syndrome. Her symptoms are pain in the right arm that she describes as an icy hot/burning sensation in the elbow that starts there and moves down into the fingers. “I warm my hand up and then it reaches a point where it can go the other extreme and gets very hot. I have had sharp pains.  I can’t move my hand back and forth.”

She experiences tight, sharp, caught, pulling, and bruising sensations in the arm. “There is a tightness to the hand, like I want to stretch it, but I am not able to. When I slightly start to move it there is a feeling of pressure and pulling at the incision point like it is caught there.  If I to try to extend it further I can feel the pulling going on. The wrist is swollen. I also have joint pains in the knees and the ankles.  Everything is better when I work out.

“I am worried, anxious and scared. I am regretting having the surgery. I am worried about the future. It is creating, fear, stress and anger. My adrenals have gone into overdrive due to the stress and anxiety.

“I am afraid that I will be incapacitated in some way and not be able to take care of my son. I fear that I will lose my job and not be able to support us.”

Analysis: This case demonstrates so many Rhus tox features: the fear of losing her job, the anxiety about her future, the feeling that she is in crisis and the fear that she will not be able to pull out of it (all typhoid miasm features and Rhus tox is a typhoid miasm remedy). The sensations she has are all Rhus tox sensations, particularly the pulling, the tightness, the tension, the caught feeling and the aggravation on first motion. The amelioration from exercise is also a big Rhus tox symptom.

Client 2. This is a 51-year-old tall, powerful, athletic looking woman. This is how she describes herself: “I am very energetic, high driven, intentional. I have done too much activity. I would work out three to four hours a day, power lifting. The intensity with which I ran my life, I was told, is what probably did me in.

“I have had tremendous stress over the last three years. My mom died three years ago. She was accompanying my dad in the ambulance to the hospital and she died of a heart attack on the way. My father died ten weeks later at the age of 90. My ex-husband whom I had been married to for 27 years died six months before that and I managed his whole estate. He died of alcoholism.

“I remarried and moved into a new home at that period of time. I stayed strong mentally through all of that. I managed three deaths in six months time single handedly. Tons of stress was put into my body.

Here is her description of her physical symptoms:

“My hips becomes stiff when I sit for more than 30 minutes. I have left hip pain that radiates down the outside of my leg toward the knee. My quads become numb when lying flat or standing. My sacroiliac joint aches.”

This is how she describes the pain: “It feels like a burning sensation that runs down the outside of my thigh. I can’t walk more than three blocks without stopping. I develop a very significant limp after the third block. The pain is basically a burning sensation. I think it is the tendons that are irritated.

“When I get up out of this chair you will see it. I will be very stiff getting out of the chair. I have to think about how to walk. Going into motion after having been stationary is difficult. I am not good for the first five or six steps. Once I get going I am okay for 150 steps consecutively. I can’t stand. That’s when I start getting a lot of pain in my hips. If I go far enough and long enough my right SI joint will get numb too. The stiffness after sitting and the stiffness in the joints feels like it is an internal thing.”

I asked her to describe stiffness: “Long before I complained about these issues, going back to when I was in dance class, I complained about being a frozen turkey. The joints just didn’t want to give. There was no ease. They were tough and resistant, not loose. They needed to be thawed out.

“When I stand up and try to walk I have to force it. It doesn’t flow. I have to make it happen. If it is really bad, I have to tap my foot for a moment to say you are going to have to start working now.

“With any extending position, such as laying down or standing up, my right side will go numb. In yoga twists I feel very constricted. It feels like I shouldn’t do a yoga twist to the left with the right leg. I don’t want to do damage, dancing on injuries and ignoring pain.

“Gripping is another important word. I feel that I am gripping in my hip joints. I am not sure how to let go. My joints can’t relax. My body’s neutral state is tense. I have to make a very conscious effort to relax.

My client has been on this remedy for six months as of the writing of this chapter. Rhus tox has helped her significantly on many levels. She has now resumed her walks in the forest, though is still not quite able to walk as far as she used to, but she is gradually getting there.

Analysis: This case contains a gold-mine of information about guiding symptoms to the remedy.

Here is a list of the Rhus tox modalities in this client’s case that helped guide me to the remedy:

1)         Aggravation from overexertion like Ruta and Arnica.

2)         Stiffness in the joints.

3)         Aggravation on initial movement, such as getting up from a chair after having been seated for a while.

4)         Aggravation from sitting.

5)         Gripping or clutching pains.

6)         Twisting pains like Ruta

7)         History of being married to an alcoholic.

8)         She has a feeling that she is in a state of crisis, and is putting every effort into getting out of it.

Rhus tox modalities: In addition to the above modalities listed for my client, Rhus tox has many other modalities that help guide to this remedy. In Rhus tox, (perhaps more than in most remedies), it is the modalities that really guide one to use this remedy. Modalities are what make the person feel better or worse. I am including other characteristic symptoms of the remedy in this list.

9)         Internal restlessness, or restlessness of the affected part is a strong indication for Rhus tox.  The patient must frequently change positions.

10)       The patient may have a feeling of apprehension or fear at night. They can feel threatened and on guard.

11)        The Rhus tox patient is typically a chilly patient and is aggravated by cold and damp weather and from getting wet.

12)       The aggravation times for Rhus tox are typically nighttime and morning.

13)       Rhus tox patients tend to be stiff and are ameliorated by exercise and stretching.

14)       A desire for milk and a red triangular tip on the tongue are other guiding symptoms to this remedy.

Here are some conditions where Rhus tox is often indicated:

1)         Sprains. Think of Rhus tox for sprains where the Rhus tox modalities are present. Please see the section on sprains in the Arnica chapter.

2)        Back, shoulder, neck, and hip injuries with the Rhus tox modalities, and where the injured area seizes up. Think of Rhus tox for back injuries from over lifting. I had a call to take Rhus tox a year ago when I sustained a serious back injury when my son jumped on my legs when I was doing the yoga pose where you have your legs straight up in the air. The force of his weight knocked me back and I injured my upper back. The muscles immediately seized up and I felt stuck, tight, and tense in the upper back. I had lost all range of motion. I took a 200C dose of the remedy and received several massages. All of this helped and I recovered within two days.

3)      Any chronic health condition with the Rhus tox modalities.

4)      Acute conditions, and respiratory ailments with the Rhus tox modalities.

5)      Poison oak or poison ivy. Rhus tox is derived from poison ivy.

Taking Rhus tox in potency antidotes the effects of poison oak or poison ivy, because the potentized remedy will antidote the effects of the crude remedy from which it is derived. This is why Apis mellifica, a remedy that comes from bees, can antidote the effects of bee stings. There are many other remedies listed for this condition, so please consult your homeopath to find out which remedy is best for you.

6)       Skin conditions, such as eczema, psoriasis, herpetic eruptions

and rashes where the Rhus tox modalities are present in the case. I recently had a call to treat a man with psoriatic arthritis with Rhus tox. His arthritic joint condition, which presented with Rhus tox modalities is what brought me to this remedy for him.

7)       Arthritic and rheumatic conditions with the Rhus tox modalities.

8)       Sciatica with the Rhus tox modalities.

9)        Plantar fasciitis or heel pain with the Rhus tox modalities.

10)      Think of Rhus tox for a person who is suffering from chronic

effects of car accidents, back injuries or other trauma, where the Rhus tox sensations and modalities are present.

Rhus tox is such a vast remedy, and what I am presenting here does not do justice to it. I could devote a volume to this one remedy alone. One of the most insightful writers about this remedy is Rajan Sankaran. In his book, “The Soul of Remedies,” he talks about the situation that often pushes people into a Rhus tox state. The situation is a child or a spouse of a person who is an alcoholic or abusive in some way. The child or spouse feels unsafe in their own home. They feel threatened by the person they live with and feel that they can harm them even while they are lying in their own bed. I have seen this to be true of many of the people to whom I have prescribed this remedy. This remedy should be thought of for people married to alcoholics.

The remedy falls into the typhoid miasm. The basic feeling here is that they are at risk of losing their position of comfort, be it their home, job security or their health. With the current economic situation where people are indeed losing their jobs and homes, I am observing that this and the other typhoid miasm remedies are called for quite often.

I have decided not to make a cream from Rhus tox, because of what it is derived from, poison ivy, and my concern that it can potentially cause skin rashes. Nonetheless I decided to include it in the book, because it is called for so frequently in first aid situations. If you are an experienced homeopath, you can use this remedy in the higher potencies, but if you are just beginning to learn about homeopathy, please use it in the lower potencies, like 6C, 12C or 30C.

  1. Dear Alka,
I am very sorry to hear about this pain you are having. There are 193 remedies listed for pain on turning in bed. Rhus tox is one of them, and a good one to consider, but since I have not taken your complete case, I cannot suggest a remedy to you.

I hope you find a homeopath to work with who can help you with your treatment, and that you feel better soon.

    In love and service,

    Deborah Olenev CCH RSHom (NA)

  2. Dear Pradeep,
I am sorry to hear about your injury. Rhus tox in the 30C or 200C strength may be excellent for you to take. Rhus tox is listed in bold for injuries to the hips. I would not combine it with the Ruta.

Please see the article on this website on How To Take Homeopathic Remedies.

I hope you recover very quickly from your injury.

    In love and service,

    Deborah Olenev CCH RSHom (NA)

  3. Dear Sanjay,
Thank you for writing. There are many remedies listed for the symptoms you are mentioning, so unfortunately I cannot recommend one remedy for you. My suggestion is to work with a homeopath who can take your complete case, and monitor and manage your case.

I wish you success in finding a homeopath to work with and in achieving your health goals.

  4. Dear Amrikh,
I am sorry to hear that you are suffering from cervical spondylosis. Unfortunately, there is no one remedy for this condition, as in homeopathy you treat the person and not the diagnosis. I looked up cervical spondylosis in my materia medica search program and the following remedies were mentioned:

Phosphoricn acid – this is listed in bold for the condition.
    Calcarea fluorica
    Mangifera indica
    Calcarea carbonica
    Kali iodatum
    Kali carbonica
    Thuja occidentalis
Funiculus umbilicalis suis (umbilical cord of pigs)
    Crotallus cascavella

Please consult with a homeopath who can take your complete case and guide you with the selection and management of your case. I wish you all the best.

  5. Dear Uday,
I am sorry that your mother has been suffering from this pain. I have not taken your mother’s case, but I repertorized the symptoms that you mentioned. Lycopodium in low potency like a 12C given at rare intervals may be helpful for her. Lycopodium has the right-sided complaints, and is listed in bold for numbness of the feet.

Other remedies also repertorize highly, such as Sepia and Rhus tox, so it would be good for you to work with a homeopath who can guide you in the treatment and selection of the remedy.

Please read the article on this website entitled How To Take Homeopathic Remedies to learn about my method of remedy administration and repetition.

I wish you and your mother all the best.

    In love and service,

    Deborah

    Hi !
My mother 76-Yrs is suffering extreme back ache, dragging & throbbing pains from the right hip to the right foot.
The entire hip to foot on right side gets aggressively stiff when she wakes up in the morning and practically is not able to move. It takes 30min to 1 hr for this stiffness to subside and allow her to function and walk properly.

Also the herniated discs in her back have caused extreme numbness of both her feet; symptoms of peripheral neuropathy exist liks sore feet; throbbing pain in the feet while standing or walking.

Will a combination of Rhus Tox and Ruta help treating her out of the extreme pain and dispair that she is going through.

    Thx & Rgds
    Udaye

  6. Dear Vivek,
Thank you for writing about your symptoms. I am sorry about the pain you have been suffering. My suggestion is to work with a classical homeopath, who will take your case, analyze it, repertorize it, and make a prescription for you, which should start you on the road to recovery.

If you live in the United States, I would be happy to work with you. Please complete the questionnaire on the website and e-mail it back to me. This let’s me know you are ready and would like to proceed.

I wish you the best of health.

    In love and service,

    Deborah

  7. Dear Tauseef,
I am sorry about the back pain you have been having. It sounds like you are taking too much of the Rhus tox and too often. When you repeat so frequently, you slow down the healing process, because you keep yourself in constant reaction mode, and do not allow the healing process to unfold.

If the Rhus tox 200C is the appropriate remedy, you should take one dose, do not repeat and evaluate yourself in six to seven weeks. If the remedy is appropriate, you should see some symptoms improve by that point, some possibly aggravate, as the remedy brings them up for treatment, and some symptoms the same, as the remedy has not begun to address them yet. At that point, I suggest making a base-line chart of your symptoms.

After that you would only repeat the remedy, if symptoms that had gotten better on the base-line chart move backward for awhile. Also keep your eyes open for any change in symptoms, which may indicate another remedy layer surfacing, which may need to be addressed by another homeopathic remedy.

I wish you success with your healing.

    In love and service,
    Deboarh

Hi I am suffering from Ankylosing spondylitis since 2012. From last April i.e.2016,I am suffering from multiple joint paining and stiffness. my shoulder , elbows, knees , ankle, foot and hip joints become stiff. Walking is becoming difficult. getting off from chair is becoming difficult. mental condition is very depressed due to illness.
all evening getting fever condition but no temperature observed.
    please suggest.

  8. Dear Yogesh,
Being a classical homeopath I prescribe one remedy at a time, and I only repeat when the remedy has run through its healing process, and there is strong evidence of a relapse, as I do not like to interrupt a dose that is active. A dose of Rhus tox 200X should hold at least several months.

What I do when I first take a person’s case is collect the list of symptoms. Then after they take the remedy, we make a base-line chart of symptoms at seven weeks to see what is better, the same, worse, old or new. We only repeat the remedy after that if three or four symptoms in the better category move backward.

A single dose of a remedy is capable of holding a year and longer, and of curing. Therefore I repeat with great care, and only when a relapse of symptoms that had been better shows that this is necessary.

In your case, my suggestion is to pause and allow the healing the process on the remedies you have taken to unfold, and then evaluate in a month or two to see if you see positive changes, and chart your symptoms. I with you success with homeopathy.

    In love and service,

    Deborah

I recently had a left knee arthroscopy. It al started with an injury at the end of 2014. I am an avid runner and weight lifter and quite honestly, i am not sure how I got the injury as i didn’t fall, twisted, or heard a pop. It came subtly. Started with mild swelling of the knee joint. I rested it. Got better so i continued my normal training. Knee didn’t like it so it continued to swell. I saw an ortho. Had MRI, was diagnosed with a tibial plateau none bruise and a lateral horn meniscus tear. 2015 rolled in. I rested a few months to allow my body to heal. But continued working upper body and biked as knee would allow it. Swelling episodes became very few and far between, by May I was back running and working lower body (squsts, lunges, dead lifts). Well, in the last 3 months swelling episodes returned. Each lasting one to two weeks. I decided to have surgery. It turns out I have synovitis. Ortho did a suprapatellar synovectomy. It has been almost two weeks since the procedure. My knee is atiff, I can’t bend it. It hets better with motion but at the same time it causes more swelling if I keep working at hetting better ROM. I am athletic, healthy, strong, flexible. Only have this issue on my knee. No other joints are affected. I am told it may be rheumatoid arthritis. I feel stuck. I had so many goals that ate crushed now. I really want to get better. I bought Apus, Rhus, and Arnica. How much and how often should I take them? Are those the best medecines to take? All my articular cartilage, menisci, and ligaments are healthy. My senovium membrane keeps swelling and making toouch fluid. Please help!

  10. Dear Lou,
I rarely prescribe as high as 1M of a remedy, Rhus tox 1M is considered a high potency remedy. I would only take a remedy of this high strength if you are positive about the prescription. A single dose of a remedy of such a high strength can hold a year longer, so you have to be very careful about repetition. You would only repeat the remedy if you have done very well on the single dose for a long time, and then you saw symptoms returning. Here are the remedy instructions I would use:

Instructions for Taking the First Dose of a New Remedy

    1) Please dissolve 8 pellets of Rhus tox 1M (if they are the very small size pellets; if they are the larger pellets, use 2 or 3 pellets only) in 4 oz. of water in a small cup. You can use a disposable cup if you wish.
    2) Once the remedy has thoroughly dissolved in the water, please stir it well.
    3) Drink 4 tablespoons of the liquid. Hold the liquid in your mouth for 15 or 20 seconds before swallowing each sip. You may drink regular water after that if you would like. Please do not eat an hour before or after taking the remedy.
    4) You can also take the dose by olfaction, which would be to breathe over the cup for one minute.
    5) Discard the remainder of the liquid on the ground outside, and clean or dispose of the cup carefully, so as not to expose anyone else in the household to the medicine.

You may experience a time in the first three weeks after taking the remedy when your symptoms might be up and down. This is the remedy cycling through your repertoire of symptoms and looking for what it needs to work on. With homeopathy symptoms often intensify before they get better. That intensification is a good thing, as it shows you that the remedy has located what it needs to work on and is addressing the symptoms. Once that intensification passes, the symptoms should get better soon. Each time you take a remedy the cycling process gets easier, but I wanted to make you aware that this is a normal process after taking a remedy. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about the initial reaction period.

I hope this information is helpful and I wish you all the best.

    In love and service,
    Deborah Olenev CCH RSHom (NA)

Wanting to know what my dosage of Rhustox 1M would be as a preventative treatment against Poison Ivy……

  11. Dear Sarah,
It is possible that Rhus tox will help cure your breakouts of poison ivy rash, but I cannot say that with any assurity without having taken your case. There are 90 remedies listed for poison ivy or poison oak. Rhus tox leads the list. Croton tiglium is another remedy with a big reputation for helping with poison ivy. The best thing to do would be to consult with a homeopath who can look at your case as a whole, and get concomitant symptoms that will help determine, which remedy is best.

I hope that your poison ivy breakouts get better soon.

    In love and service,

    Deborah Olenev

  12. Dear Mitch,
It is possible that the Rhus tox would help you again, but my recommendation is to consult a homeopath who can take your case and do a thorough study of our symptoms and situation. If you are interested in consulting with me, please complete the adult questionnaire and e-mail it back to me. Once I receive it, I will know that you are ready and interested in a consultation. I am looking forward to possibly working with you and doing my best to help you with your health.

    In love and service,

    Deborah Olenev CCH RSHom (NA)

    Hello,
I truly appreciate your article. I began using homeopathic remedies 21yrs ago and truly believe in them. At the time I was 25yrs old and broke out with the chickenpox. I suffered greatly until my wife came home with some Rhus tox. This was new to us but I was so desperate I tried it and it worked wonders. The aching and especially the feeling of being on fire from the itching completely stopped. We even began using No sodes for our son back then. I have been considering the use of it again due another condition I developed. Vestibular neuritis. It’s believed that the vestibular nerve becomes infected by a virus such as the chickenpox and or herpes. Dr’s can not do anything to confirm the cause due to the sensitivity of the area. Normal practice is to use a drug like clonazepam to calm the nerve and relieve the Symptoms. For me its dizziness. Like a buzzer going off in my head day and night. Do you think Rhus tox would help with my condition considering it helped while I had the chickenpox? This all started in Nov 2014 and worsened after sinus surgery in Jan 2015. The clonazepam enables me to function and mostly sleep. But It has slowed me down tremendously. I used to surf and exercise avidly. I am currently trying to ween off and see if the neuritis is gone. This is the first time I have used a pharmecutical drug in over 20yrs. I would really appreciate your thoughts.
    Mitch, Ca.
    Thank you

    • Sarah on April 28, 2015 at 1:14 pm

I have large breakouts of poison ivy rash will this help cure or clear that up?

  13. Dear Sandra,
Thank you for your question. I cannot guarantee that Rhus tox is the best remedy for you to take, because there are many remedies that have Rhus tox modalities, such as amelioration from a warm shower, and aggravation on initial movement. Rhus tox also has aggravation from the start of movement, better as they get warmed up, but then worse again from continued motion, so if they walk too long the symptoms can be worse again.

Rhus tox is also characterized by the stiffness. The important thing to remember about homeopathy is that there is a lot of mystery to it, just like there is to life. You do not have to have all the symptoms of a remedy to make it worth trying. Even if a couple of symptoms match, especially if they are strong symptoms in you as well as in the remedy, then even if certain other characteristics of the remedy are not present in your case, then it can still be worth trying.

The last part of your question was if the mentals matched, but the stiffness was not present, would Rhus tox still be a correct prescription. I do not know. One would have to have a look at the whole case, repertorize it and decide if this is the best remedy for the case.

Thanks again for your question. I wish you all the best.

    Warm regards,
    Deborah Olenev CCH RSHom (NA)

    • sandra on October 21, 2014 at 9:37 pm

even tho rhus tox is better for warm showers…………does it cover stiffness in knees and hard/painful to bend after a long hot shower?

and even tho its better for walking/motion…………..would it cover stiffness in hip joints after continuous long walks??

also….if the mentals matched a person…like the abuse fear part…but they have no stiffness, would you still prescribe it???

    thanks

  14. I get great results for myself and children and husband for bee, yellow jacket, and Hornet stings with Rhus Tox. Even though Apis matches the physical symptoms, it’s Rhus which brings relief. I’m thinking it has to do with the underlying feeling of “my garden isn’t a safe place”. I always wondered why Rhus worked and this article helps explain it. Thanks much!

  15. Dear Bang,
It is possible that Rhus toxicodendron can help you with the herniated disc in your lower back. The best thing to do to make sure you are taking a remedy that corresponds with your symptoms is to consult a homeopath. There are hundreds of remedies that are listed for back pain, but the job of the homeopath is to narrow the selection down to a single remedy that matches your current symptoms. Unfortunately, I cannot give you more guidance without taking your complete case, which would require your completing a questionnaire and making an appointment. The questionnaire can be found on my website. I hope your back pain gets better soon.
    Warm regards,
    Deborah Olenev CCH RSHom (NA)

  16. Dear Renu,
It is possible that Rhus toxicodendron can help you with the back pain you are experiencing.

Thank you very much for the thorough understanding of Rhus Tox remedy. I found it in my cupboard and I can’t remember why I purchased it – Boiron in pellet form. It is not expired yet, gratefully as after reading your post I reckon it will be very helpful for my situation.

I have been quite stiff in the hips and the heels, and although I stretch and try to keep myself limber I find I still get very stiff, and now that I think about it it seems to go hand in hand with the stress I have been having about my finances, not feeling secure about my job and not knowing if I will have sufficient funds from one month to the next. I will give this a try! along with my other supplements and stretching.

    Thank you!
    Monique
