Homeopathy A Friend to Women
The Inception of Homeopathy
Homeopathy is a therapeutic art and science founded in Germany over two hundred years ago by the visionary physician and chemist Dr. Samuel Hahnemann. He grew disillusioned with the quality of medical care available in Europe, and was disturbed by the dangerous and frequently harmful treatment patients received. Convinced that there must be a more natural and gentle way to restore health, he set about to find it. What he discovered was homeopathy.
The inspiration came while he was translating an article written by another physician describing why Cinchona Bark was curative in malaria. He disagreed with the explanation of this doctor, so he decided to test the substance on himself to see if he could learn something about the drug and why it helped in this condition. He ingested the medicine and subsequently developed malaria like symptoms. From this he concluded that the medicine was able to cure the symptoms of malaria, because it had the ability to cause similar symptoms when tested on healthy people for experimental purposes. This is the central principle upon which the homeopathic system of medicine is based.
Hahnemann proceeded to test hundreds of substances on himself and on colleagues who were enthusiastic about his approach. By finding out how their own health was altered by these drugs, they discovered the characteristics of medicines and their healing potential.
Hahnemann applied these medicines to sick people by matching their symptoms with drugs that produced similar symptoms in provings. The medicines behaved like templates superimposed on the patient’s illness. If the fit was very close the medicine resonated with the vital force of the patient initiating a curative process leading to the restoration of health.
The founder of homeopathy discovered that when he administered crude doses of medicinal substances, his patients would often experience toxic side effects before getting better. This did not satisfy him, because he believed the healing process should be gentle and the patient spared any needless suffering. To this end he experimented with diluting the medicines. Contrary to expectation he found that rather than making the substances less effective, diluting the remedies and succussing them (shaking vigorously) between dilutions actually increased their therapeutic power dramatically.
Now after two centuries have passed, we have thousands of well-proven remedies that we can employ for the benefit of mankind. These medicines come from the animal, mineral and vegetable kingdoms, and are applicable to the full range of human afflictions.
Selection of a Remedy
One of the most important elements to guide the homeopath to the remedy is the mental and emotional state of the patient. Each remedy has its own mental and emotional range and curative effect. Remedies that we use to treat ailments from grief, for example, were found to produce the emotion of grief to a great extent in the provers. If a woman has developed health problems after a grief or from disappointments in love, a homeopath would be able to administer a remedy where grief is uppermost like Ignatia amara, and expect to see an improvement in all areas of her life.
Another emotion frequently encountered is the feeling of being forsaken or unloved. Pulsatilla has this symptom to a marked degree. The prescription would have to be supported by the characteristic general symptoms of the remedy as well, which in the case of Pulsatilla are thirstlessness, warm-bloodedness, amelioration from cold applications, aggravation from rich foods, and wandering pains.
This extraordinary healing art is also able to address ailments that come on after physical trauma, such as blows to the head or the trauma of childbirth. Arnica montana is one of our great trauma remedies, and bears the distinction of being the remedy most responsible for popularizing homeopathy.
In instances where a woman has been unable to regain her health since an acute illness, homeopathy can perform wonders, restoring the vitality that had been lost with remedies such as Gelsemium and Phosphoric Acid.
Sometimes a remedy has to be selected that can address inherited conditions as when there is a history of cancer, tuberculosis, or syphilis in the family. This is where homeopathy outshines all other therapies, because it can free individuals from inherited disease tendencies.
A Friend for Life
Homeopathy can offer good health to women in all stages of their lives from infancy through old age. It is beneficial for the full range of emotional, mental and physical problems that a woman is likely to experience, and can help her through the transitional and developmental milestones of her life.
For the child, homeopathy can help with clingy behavior, difficulties with sleep, behavioral problems, learning disabilities, fears, shyness, excessive anger, skin conditions, reactions to vaccines and many other frequently encountered problems. It is unsurpassed in the treatment of childhood acute diseases, yielding rapid results in a gentle manner, by stimulating the child’s immune system rather than suppressing it.
During the teen years homeopathy can help with the hormonal changes of puberty and the acne that often appears at this time, but primarily it can assist with the emotional upheavals, which frequently occur as little girls make the transition to womanhood.
Later in life when a woman gets pregnant, or has a hard time conceiving (homeopathy can help with problems of infertility), it can assist with difficulties frequently encountered, such as morning sickness and depression. By treating the mother during pregnancy and making her as healthy as she can be, we can insure that the baby will be born healthy and free of inherited diseases. By treating throughout pregnancy, we also assist the mother to go through childbirth safely and joyfully.
The homeopathic healing art is beneficial in helping women overcome the effects of hormonal shocks to the system, which can occur after a difficult birth, abortion, hysterectomy, and the use of birth control pills. Sepia, a remedy made from the inky juice of the Cuttlefish is a commonly prescribed remedy for women who have lost their spunk after a hormonal shock. Just as the Cuttlefish spreads an inky cloud around itself, so the woman needing Sepia envelops herself in a cloud of gloom. She feels emotionally flat, and has an inability to express love or display affection to her husband and children. She loses her sex drive and wants to be left alone, feeling too tired to cope with housework, and from weakness resents any demands on her time and energies.
This therapeutic science is extremely beneficial to women during menopause. Remedies such as Lachesis muta are able to help women pass through this transition with relative ease. As the remedies initiate a healing process symptoms such as hot flashes, insomnia, lack of energy, weepiness, and anxiety begin to gradually disappear in such a subtle fashion that the person is unaware of how they passed.
Homeopathy is truly a friend to women. It is a comprehensive system of medicine which is able to meet the needs of people in all facets of their lives, and through all of life’s transitions. By strengthening the immune system and helping to balance the mind and the emotions, homeopathy can help women achieve the higher purposes of their lives, and feel their very best.
Note regarding blog comments:
I appreciate your visiting my website and reading my articles and taking the time to write your comments. I welcome your comments and will post them if it looks like what you have to say will be helpful to others. I may not write a comment back, but will let the article itself present my point of view.
I am no longer responding to people’s questions regarding personal health matters on my blog, because it becomes stressful for me due to the volume of such questions that I get.
Also there is no way I can actually answer these questions properly without familiarizing myself with the person’s health.
For anyone who is interested in working with me, please complete the appropriate questionnaire and send it to me. This way I will know that you are ready to move forward with a consultation.
Wishing you health and happiness,
