Homeopathic Remedies Lined up

There are as many opinions on the subject of how to take homeopathic remedies as there are homeopaths. Understanding homeopathic posology is not easy, and it really takes years of practice to get a feeling for it. The goal of Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathy, was to prescribe in a way that would be as gentle as possible, while keeping the healing moving forward.

In fact, his advocacy of the minimum dose, which is one of the cornerstones of homeopathy, was to try to find a way to eliminate the toxic side effects that people would experience from crude doses of substances, hence his use of highly diluted and succussed remedies. He tended to work with lower potencies throughout his life, like 6C’s and LM potencies. Only toward the end of his life did he begin to use 30C potencies, and I believe he only used the 200C a few times.

The use of higher potencies, such as the 200C, 1M, 10M and higher were popularized by homeopaths such as James Tyler Kent. Nowadays the full range of potencies are used by homeopaths, and there are various guidelines and philosophies about choosing which potency is best indicated for the individual.

Useful Things To Know About Taking Homeopathic Remedies

Boiron Remedy Bottles

Boiron Remedy Bottles

Never follow the dosage instructions on the vials of homeopathic remedies that you buy in the health food store or on-line. The FDA requires this information to be printed on the bottles, but it is overdosing for homeopathic remedies. Also do not pay attention to the indications on the bottle. Any remedy can have hundreds or thousands of symptoms that it can help with, but there is only space to print one symptom on the remedy vial.

For constitutional treatment a single dose of a homeopathic remedy can hold for many weeks or months without needing to be repeated. The sign I am looking for to know it is a good time to repeat a remedy is the return of symptoms that had improved after the first dose of the remedy. When a person takes a homeopathic remedy there is usually an initial reaction period that can last hours, days, weeks or months, depending upon the circumstances or how deeply rooted a symptom is. Unless the patient is in pain or distress, I prefer not to interfere with this initial reaction period.

I stress the above point, because many people treat the fluctuations in the initial reaction period as indications that it is necessary to repeat the remedy, or change the prescription. This is not accurate and slows down or interferes with  the healing process.

In most cases, I like to evaluate the response to the remedy at seven weeks from when the patient received the remedy, That is when I usually schedule the first follow up consultation. At that time I make a base-line chart of the patient’s symptoms that tracks what changes have taken place. I would then only repeat the remedy, if the symptoms that had improved on the base-line chart begin to relapse, as that is an indication that the dose of the remedy has gone full circle, exhausted its action, and it is now safe and advantageous to repeat.

In many cases a remedy is not needed at the follow up consultation, because the patient is doing well, there is no evidence of a relapse and the healing process is unfolding well. In other cases at the first or second follow up consultation or some time down the road, there may be a sign that the remedy given has worked well, but that symptoms that had gotten better are starting to return, and the patient feels ready and the homeopath feels that repeating the remedy would be a good idea.

A Second Prescription that is Not a Repetition of the Previous Remedy

Another scenario would be that we discover that the dose given has cleared off a layer and a new symptom picture has emerged underneath. This layer has always been there, but now it stands out in full relief and we can see it clearly. We now have a reliable basis on which to make a second prescription, which is not a repetition of the previous remedy. The homeopath recognizes this symptom image as one corresponding to a particular remedy, and in accord with the patient moves forward with a new prescription.

Treating Acute Illnesses

After administering a remedy during an acute illness, I observe the patient for 48 hours. In most cases there should be noticeable improvement within 24 hours. In other cases it can take longer. I only repeat the remedy if symptoms that had improved following the initial dose show signs of relapsing, and the relief the patient felt initially is waning.

If a repetition of the remedy is required during an acute illness, then the remedy can be repeated in water, but I vary the quantity of water used and the number of succussions given, per my description below about how to repeat the remedy in water.

Alternatively I may recommend that the patient do a pocket or room dose of the remedy to bring them easily and gently back under the influence of the remedy. Please read the article I wrote about the pillow, pocket and room dose. Here is a link to the article.

What to Expect After Taking a Homeopathic Remedy

When a person takes a homeopathic remedy, the remedy will cycle through the patient’s repertoire of symptoms as it looks for what it needs to work on. It will find the most recently experienced symptoms first, and it will work on older symptoms later on. The patient may experience a brief intensification of the symptoms as the remedy works to address them. This aggravation should be followed by an amelioration of the symptoms, and an improved sense of well being in the patient.

Many people misinterpret the aggravation that occurs in the first few days or weeks after taking the remedy as a sign that the remedy is not working, and then change the remedy, or repeat it too soon. This is a very common mistake. When changes are taking place, whether you interpret them as good or bad, the rule is not to interfere, but watch and wait to see how things settle. Do not interfere during transitions.

Evaluating the Sensitivity Level of the Patient and Adjusting the Remedy Accordingly

Following the advice of Samuel Hahnemann in the Organon of Medicine*, I prefer to administer the remedy diluted in water. When given in water reactions are more gentle and aggravations are minimized. Many homeopaths use the dry dose method and that is also fine, but from my experience administering the remedy in water is more gentle.

The potency of the remedy used,  the quantity of pellets used, the amount of water used to dilute the remedy in, the quantity of the liquid dilution that the patient drinks are all factors that the homeopath can adjust based on his or her intuition about the strength of the vital force of the patient, or the sensitivity level of the patient. The goal is to keep aggravations or reactions to a minimum while moving the healing forward in as gentle a manner as possible.

Highly Sensitive Patients

For a highly sensitive person, I would use a low potency remedy, choosing between a 6C, 12C or 30C potency or LM potency, or a pillow or pocket dose of the remedy.

If I am treating a highly sensitive person with a water dose, I would use only one pellet, diluted in two, four or more ounces of water and give one teaspoon or more of the liquid to start with. As I observe the response of the patient to the remedy, I will reassess the quantity used when a repetition is needed.

The Size of the Pellets and the Quantity to Use

From my experience quantity often does make a difference. If more pellets are used the remedy tends to hold longer. If I am using the larger sized pellets, which are more common these days, I tend to use one pellet for sensitive people, and between two and four pellets for everyone else. For children I tend to use two pellets.

The reason I pay attention to the quantity of pellets used is that I want to be gentle and effective, and at the same time I do not want to cause an unnecessarily strong reaction, which can happen if too many pellets of the remedy are given. It is a balancing act.

If the pellets are the medium sized ones, I tend to use eight of them. If they are the tiny ones, I tend to use ten to twelve pellets as a dose.

Selection of the Potency for People Who Have Average Sensitivity

Guidelines have been developed over the centuries about how to determine the potency for the patient. Here are some Guidelines:

Take into consideration how much experience the person has had with homeopathy. The goal is to be efficient, effective and gentle. It is good to test the waters with a new client and start low or with a medium strength potency, unless you have great confidence in the prescription and in the vitality of the patient. The 30C and 200C strengths are considered to be medium strength potencies.

The weaker the person is, the older the person is, the sicker the person is, and the lower their vital energy is, the more appropriate it is to use the lower potencies, such as a 12C or 30C strength.

The younger a person is, the stronger a person is, the more vital a person is, the more clear their symptom picture is, the more the patient can benefit from medium to higher strength potencies, ranging from the 30C to the 200C to the 1M and the 10M strengths. I very rarely venture into potencies above that.

Selecting the Remedy Potency Intuitively

The way I select the remedy and potency for my clients is an intuitive process, which is backed up by many years of experience. The reason I go deeper than my intellect to do this work is that I have been shown time and again that the ego is not a completely reliable guide for selecting the remedy and potency. One of the ego’s functions is to take a position and defend it. It can defend a correct position and an incorrect one. This is why I rely on study and analysis, but ultimately intuition and higher or inner guidance to make sure that I am not being led by my ego in making a prescription. I place top priority in nurturing my intuition through a daily meditation practice, because it is crucial to my doing my work as a homeopath well.

One Should Never Repeat the Remedy in Exactly the Same Form

According to Samuel Hahnemann one should never repeat a homeopathic remedy in exactly the same form. He recommended altering the dose slightly when it is repeated. I accomplish this in several ways:

I vary the quantity of water used, so if I used 4 oz. of water to dilute the remedy for the first dose administered, I will use 6 oz. of water for the second dose, and 8 oz. for the third dose, 10 oz. for the fourth dose, and then I start over again at 4 oz.

I always succuss for the second and subsequent doses. I do not succuss for the first dose, unless I am using LM potencies. The way I succuss is that I dissolve the remedy in a glass jar or plastic bottle that seals tightly, and then I hit the jar against a book.

I ask the patient to drink the amount that I feel would be appropriate for them, with the intention of keeping aggravations to a minimum. For people of average and high vitality I usually ask them to drink all of the liquid. I also instruct the patient to swish the liquid in their mouth for 15 to 20 seconds before swallowing each sip, so that the mucous membranes in the mouth are bathed in the liquid. I may also recommend taking the remedy by olfaction, which would be to breathe over the solution as it is dissolving in the water.

In the past I used to use dry doses. What I found was that dry doses do tend to hold quite a bit longer than doses dissolved in water, but they can cause unnecessarily strong aggravations. When I switched to dosing in water, I found that the remedies work much more gently, even if they need to be repeated sooner than they would with a dry dose.

People Who Are Afraid to Take Homeopathic Remedies

There are some patients who are very afraid of taking homeopathic remedies. One way I have found to help them get comfortable with the remedy and overcome the fear is to take a pillow dose, pocket or room dose of the remedy. Here is a link to an article I wrote on how to take the remedy in this way.

Sample Prescription

Here is a sample of a first prescription of a typical 30C strength remedy in a person with average sensitivity:

Instructions for Taking the First Dose of a New Remedy

1) Please dissolve (number of pellets) of (name of the remedy) in 4 oz. of water in a small cup. You can use a disposable cup if you wish. (The quantity of pellets depends on their size. If they are the large ones, please use 3 or 4 pellets. If they are the medium sized ones, please use 8 pellets; if they are the tiny sized ones, please use 12 pellets).
2) Allow the remedy to thoroughly dissolve in the water. It may take half an hour or longer to dissolve. (Stirring is optional. My reasoning is that the water receives the information from the remedy as soon as it comes in contact with it, so I do not believe stirring makes any difference).
3) Please drink all of the liquid and swish it around in your mouth before swallowing each sip. Please do not eat an hour before or after taking the remedy. It is okay to drink water. (I adjust the amount of water I recommend the patient drinks from the solution, based on my perception of their sensitivity level).
4) In addition to taking the remedy orally, you can take the dose by olfaction. You can do this by holding the cup and breathing over it while you are waiting for the pellets to dissolve.
5) Please dispose of the disposable cup.

You may experience a time in the first weeks after taking the remedy when your symptoms might be up and down. This is the remedy cycling through your repertoire of symptoms and looking for what it needs to work on. I wanted to make you aware that this is a normal process after taking a homeopathic remedy.

Here is a sample of a second prescription of a typical 30C strength remedy in a person with average sensitivity.

Instructions for Taking the Second Dose of the Remedy in Water

1) Please dissolve (number of pellets) of (name of your remedy) in 6 oz. of water in a glass jar or a small disposable water bottle container. Please wait 30 minutes to make sure the pellets have completely dissolved.
2) Please give the bottle 10 firm succussions. You do this by hitting the bottle or jar against a book.
3) Please drink all of the liquid. Hold the liquid in your mouth for 15 or 20 seconds before swallowing each spoonful. Please do not eat an hour before or after taking the remedy. (I adjust the amount of water I recommend the patient drinks from the solution, based on my perception of their sensitivity level).
4) You can also take the dose by olfaction, which would be to breathe over the bottle while you are waiting for the pellets to dissolve.
5) Please dispose of the bottle or jar.

You may experience a time in the first weeks after taking the remedy when your symptoms might be up and down. This is the remedy cycling through your repertoire of symptoms and looking for what it needs to work on. Each time you take a remedy the cycling process gets easier, but I wanted to make you aware that this is a normal process after taking a remedy.

Instructions for Taking the Third and Subsequent Doses of Your Remedy in Water.

For each subsequent dose, I add 5 succussions to the bottle, as follows:

1st dose – no succussions
2nd dose – 10 succussions
3rd dose – 15 succussions
4th dose – 20 succussions and so forth.

Alter the amount of water used with each dose to further change the stimulus slightly.

For example:

1st dose – 4 oz. of water.
2nd dose – 6 oz. of water.
3rd dose – 8 oz. of water.
4th dose – 10 oz. of water
5th dose – 4 oz. of water.
6th dose 6 oz. of water, and so forth.

The Pillow Dose, The Pocket Dose and The Room Dose

These are methods of exposing yourself to the remedy, which I developed over the years of my homeopathic practice and which I find to be very effective. I find the pillow dose, in particular, to be equally as effective as the traditional dry dose or water dose of the remedy. Here is a link to an article, which goes into depth on how to take remedies in this fashion, and explains when one method may be better than the other.

LM Potencies

I have written extensively about LM potencies, as I used them quite a bit in the past. These days I no longer use this method, because I find it puts many people on something of a roller coaster ride. It is extremely difficult to work with, and requires a lot of supervision by the homeopath. This is a method that Hahnemann came to in his later years and which he wrote about in the 6th Edition of the Organon of Medicine (which goes by various names, depending on who translated the book).* Link to article about LM Potencies.

Conclusion

I am sharing this information about homeopathic posology with you, because there is a lot of confusion about this subject amongst homeopaths and the public. There is always more to learn about homeopathic posology. My understanding of this subject is constantly evolving. I am sure that if I were to rewrite this article a year from now, I would find many things that needed to be changed, because of having acquired more experience.

I would love people to have positive, safe and gentle experiences with homeopathy. I have said this before and I will say it again. Homeopathy is Divine Medicine. It is Spiritual Medicine. It is Non-material medicine. It is Effective Medicine. I see miracles every day in my practice. Why? Homeopathy is also Miraculous Medicine.

Wishing you health and happiness,

Note regarding blog comments:

Dear Friends,
I appreciate your visiting my website and reading my articles and taking the time to write your comments. I welcome your comments and will post them if it looks like what you have to say will be helpful to others. I may not write a comment back, but will let the article itself present my point of view.

I am no longer responding to people’s questions regarding personal health matters on my blog, because it becomes stressful for me due to the volume of such questions that I get.

Also there is no way I can actually answer these questions properly without familiarizing myself with the person’s  health.

For anyone who is interested in working with me, please complete the appropriate questionnaire and send it to me. This way I will know that you are ready to move forward with a consultation.

  1. I like that you said that sometimes if you take the remedy for so long it would have no effect after. My friend and I notice that when her mom was sick. I’m going to check for some homeopathic remedies online.

  2. Dear Usman,
Thank you for asking so many wonderful questions. I will do my best to answer your questions:

    I have some questions:

Question: Does the constitutional remedy always stay the same with the person for his entire life, or may it change with time.

Answer: The constitutional remedy can change with time, and with a change in circumstances, stresses, and traumas. People can respond to a wide range of remedies. An analogy has been given of the layers of the onion. When you peel off the top layer, based on the most pressing current symptoms, a new layer may appear underneath.

Question: I am on Sulphur as a constitutional remedy, and I want to take a Lycopodium dose with that too. Can I use Lycopodium after sulphur or not.

Answer: Sulphur has a distinct constitutional picture, and Lycopodium has its own distinct constitutional picture. You should not use them at the same time. If you have been given Sulphur or have taken it yourself, and after a time you see a distinct change in your symptoms that call for Lycopodium, then you can change to Lycopodium, but you should not take the remedies simultaneously. Lycopodium is known for predominantly right sided complaints, aggravation from 4 to 8 p.m., low self confidence, dictatorial nature, love of power, amongst many other symptoms.

Question: I don’t understand how come a 30c has that much power to stay in the body for this long . I don’t agree with that . If that is the case then why do homeopathic doctors have their patients for 10 years doing their treatment with giving a dose every 15 days.

Answer: There are as many ways to practice homeopathy as there are people practicing it. People bring their own education, and miseducation to the table when prescribing remedies. I can only speak from my own experience and training. Yes, a single dose of a 30C remedy can hold in certain individuals for years, and can bring about a cure. Or a single dose of a remedy can remove a layer, and a new symptom picture will appear underneath.

Repeating the remedy every 15 days, is indeed what some homeopaths do, but it is not what I do. From my experience, the dose is in the early stages of setting up its action in the first fifteen days, and this should not be interrupted with a new dose. The remedy should be given time to work and to go full circle, meaning aggravation, followed by amelioration, followed by relapse before considering repeating the remedy.

I hope this gives you my perspective on your questions.

I wish you success with your homeopathic treatment.

    In love and service,

    Deborah Olenev CCH RSHom (NA)

  3. Dear Lara,
Thank you for writing with your question. I am sorry for taking so long to reply to you. My father had an unfortunate accident and I have been taking care of him, hence my delay in responding to your comment.

The rule of repetition is that if a remedy is helping do not repeat. If you felt that the remedy seems to have worked it means that it is on the job, and working to help improve your health. You do not want to repeat it or interrupt its work with an additional dose of the remedy. Also you do not need to change the potency, if you are having a positive response to the potency you are on.

Please read the article on How To Take Homeopathic Remedies carefully. The reason this is important is that you can cause unnecessary and prolonged aggravations by too frequent repetition of the remedy, or by interrupting a dose that is active.

My suggestion is to be patient and allow the remedy to work. You can’t force the remedy to do more or work faster by taking more of it. A healing process has to unfold, order has to be restored, and this takes as much time as it needs to be accomplished.

I hope you are feeling well.

    In love and service,

    Deborah Olenev CCH RSHom (NA0

  4. Dear Dariusz,
Thank you for writing with your question. I am sorry for taking so long to reply to you. My father had an unfortunate accident and I have been taking care of him, hence my delay in responding to your comment. I hope that you are feeling much better by this point from your fractures and accidents. The combination first aid homeopathic remedy that you are mentioning should have helped you with your recovery.

If you read my article on How to Take Homeopathic Remedies, you see that I would prescribe one remedy at a time, except that I have seen that in acute and traumatic situations, you can add additional remedies based on what is uppermost at the time.

For example my father broke his left shoulder and had shoulder replacement surgery. I gave him Arnica 1M after he came home from the hospital, which was three days later, because of the extensive bruising of his torso and arm, aggravation from touch, swelling and induration of the arm. Arnica is also very good for trauma. This was a single one time dose that I did not repeat. Within a couple of days the bruising and swelling were 85% resolved.

After that the symptom that needed to be addressed most urgently was the extreme difficulty rising from a seat and stiffness that my father was experiencing, so within two days of the Arnica 1M dose, I gave him a single one time dose of Rhus toxicodendron 200C. This helped within a few days with his ability to rise from a seat and lift his legs.

Then his blood pressure went up very high and I gave him Digitalis 200C. I am saying all of this, because in a crisis situation, we can bend the rules a little and be responsive to what the patient needs help with and change the remedy accordingly.

I hope that this answer helps you understand a little about how frequently to repeat remedies and how much to use. For my father I gave 8 pellets of the medium size pellets dissolved in 4 ounces of water, and each remedy administered only once.

Homeopathic remedies are very different from Western pharmaceutical drugs, and you have to be aware of that. With homeopathy less is always more. This means only repeat the remedy when you have strong evidence that the previous dose has helped, and now you are seeing that the patient is in a relapse. Please read the article to see more about the rules of repetition.

One of the hardest things to understand in homeopathy is posology, but this is extremely important, because homeopathic remedies are very powerful healing agents, much more so than Western pharmaceutical drugs. The evidence of this is that a single dose of a homeopathic remedy can hold a year and longer. Whereas you have to repeat your pharmaceutical drugs every day.

I hope this information is helpful and I wish you a speedy recovery.

    Hi,

I took one dose (5 drops) of carbo vegetabilis 200C yesterday for very mild but annoying digestive discomfort and it seems to have worked but I feel like I need to continue taking it, is it ok to continue taking it?

Should I be taking the 30c instead then I can take more frequently?

    Regards,

Hello Deborah, just came across your great website. Yesterday came my two 200C (Potency self choosed) homeopathy bottles of Cnidium Monnieri and one a mix of Arnica/Cale/Hyp/Rhus/Ruta/Symp for broken bones/fractues. I had 2 accidents where I have get fractures, each time I wasnt in hospital and the fratcures have not healed yet (its about 9 months now since my 1st accident). The Bottle contain 250 very small pills per 1g. My question is the dosage, how many pills should I take out for the first dose and for the other next doses? Should I do the remedies every day for the first week, and then once a week for about 4 more weeks? I heared one should always start with 30C, Ive got just 200C as I thought I could devide it somehow, like take less pills to get 30C potency, is that possible? Much appreciated for the answers. Please help me.. Blessings and may God be with you and protect you.

  5. Dear Sally,
I am very sorry to hear that your son has glioblastoma brain cancer. I am not sure why these two remedies were selected for this condition, so it is very hard for me to respond to your question. There are 89 remedies listed in my homeopathic software for tumors of the brain, and these two remedies are not making the best showing.

I have very little experience with the Banerji protocol, but as I have said in other blog comments, I don’t believe in doing anything in a routine fashion. Changes can happen very rapidly and the homeopath needs to be flexible and not married to a protocol.

As far as dissolving the pellets in water or dry. I think it is better to dissolve in water, because Hahnemann taught that you should never repeat the remedy in the exact same way, and with water there are many ways that the stimulus can be altered.

I hope your son recovers soon.

  6. Dear Trish,
Thank you for writing. Whenever I prescribe a remedy I consult my higher power (whom I call Atman or My Inner Teacher or the Self). My ego, of course, has no idea what potency to prescribe, so I always surrender this decision to a mysterious force that somehow knows the answer. For this reason I am not able to answer your question.

These days I am teaching people how to get in touch with their own Atman, as everyone has one and everyone is one. This is the greatest possible gift, as the bottom line purpose of religion is to help people realize the Self, or become self realized.

If my clients cannot do this for themselves, I can consult my Atman for them, to get answers about remedies and potencies.

    I hope this answer helps.

    In love and service,

    Deborah Olenev CCH RSHom (NA)

  7. Dear Anita,
I am very sorry to hear about your father’s bone fracture. One remedy to consider for him is Rhus toxicodendron 30C, given one time and not repeated. Rhus toxicodendron is listed in bold for fractures to the hip and for restlessness. Usually when Rhus tox is needed there is an aggravation at the start of motion and amelioration as the part gets warmed up. Other first aid remedies, such as Arnica, Ledum and Hypericum may also be of use. I hope your father recovers soon.

    In love and service,

    Hello Deborah,
Thank you for taking the time to help others.
My 49 year old son has glioblastoma brain cancer. I understand the Banerji protocol, which is Ruta g 6c and Calc Phos 6x 5 pellets under tongue two times a day, can assist in getting rid of the glioblastoma. Would it be best to switch to dissolving it in water as you recommend?
    Thank you

    Dear Deborah,
When I read your article, with its deep understanding of Hahnemann’s gentle approach, I felt deeply understood because I react so sensitively to remedies. I was prescribed Phosphorus 1M as a constitutional remedy in Germany a few years ago and I feel confident it is the right constitutional remedy as I experience the remedy picture so fully. This has been the case for some time now, yet I feel frightened to take it at that potency, because I have experienced such strong reactions when I have taken it before. I haven’t taken it for over a year now. Could you suggest a more appropriate potency for me to take this remedy, with advice on how to take it?
    Kind regards,
    Trish

My dad who is 72 years old had a fall and had hip bone fracture. His hip joint ball had to be replaced. He was operated on 1st of Aug and is back home walking with the walker. But now he has an acute pricking pain in the body due to which he cannot sleep and is very restless. He is also feeling very weak. He is diabetic patient but within limits. No pain killers are given now. Can you suggest some homeopathy medicine. Thanks in advance

  8. Dear Veronika,
Since I have not seen your child, I would not be able to tell you which of these remedies would be helpful I always consult my higher power when making a prescription, so the prescription is not done by my ego, but by my Inner Teacher, Atman, Soul, whatever you want to call it.

On the level of the ego, it is important to look at the whole person, and not take one symptom out of context of the whole. Myopia is listed under 134 remedies, so we need a rounded out picture to be able to round down to a few remedies that we can consider, and then test.

I wish you all the best.

My child (6 years old) was diagnosed with low myopia (nearsightedness) probably caused by too much close work from early childhood. I am wondering about ruta, crocus Sativus and physostigma for this problem and how to dose.
    Thank you so much ,

  9. Dear Vipin,
Thank you for your excellent question. We have many remedies in homeopathy that can help with allergies. Some remedies are very well known for treating allergies, such as Allium cepa and Sabadilla, but any constitutional remedy can help with allergies if it matches the symptoms of the patient, and is prescribed according to the law of similars.

For best results, please work with a homeopath who can select a good remedy for you and guide you in your treatment.

I hope you feel better very soon.

  10. Dear Nilufer,
Thank you for writing with this question. A single dose of a 30C remedy can hold anywhere from a few months to a few years. This is not something that you should be repeating daily or several times a day. Please read the full article to understand how I prescribe homeopathic remedies. These are powerful healing agents, and it is advisable to get educated on how to work with them to get the positive results you desire. I hope this article helps people learn how to work with remedies safely.

Good luck with your homeopathic treatment.

  11. Dear Anjali,
Thank you for writing about your son who has been diagnosed with ASD. I work with many children with Austistic Spectrum Disorders. Homeopathy can make a very big difference in their lives and the lives of their parents. From my experience it takes dedication, hard work and commitment to effect positive results. If you are interested in working with me, please send me your child’s completed questionnaire and I will do my best to help.

  12. Dear Romain,
Thank you for writing and sharing your experience with homeopathy. This is my suggestion for moving forward. I would make a chart of symptoms, with the following categories:

    Better

    Same

    Worse

    Old

    New

I usually wait till the seventh week before creating this chart. At that point I suggest that you classify all of your symptoms in the correct category. Better, does not mean gone. It means that you are experiencing noticeable improvement. Pay particular attention to this category, because you should not repeat the remedy unless three of four symptoms in the better category move backward for a certain time. Two to three weeks would be a safe amount of time to wait. When symptoms in the better category move backward for this amount of time, it indicates that you are in a relapse mode and that it is safe to repeat the remedy.

When I repeat the remedy, I follow Hahnemann’s guidelines, in which he says, never to repeat the remedy in exactly the same way. I accomplish this by adding an additional two ounces of water to the quantity I had used the previous time, so if I dissolved the remedy in 4 oz. of water the first time I took it, I would dissolve the new dose in 6 oz. of water when it is time to repeat. I also succuss the bottle I prepare the remedy in a certain number of times. I often start with 10 succussions, and if I repeat in the future, I will go to 15 succussions, and increase by 5 succussions, each time the remedy is repeated.

I hope this will help you figure out what to watch for to know that it is time to repeat the remedy, and how to repeat it in a safe manner.

    In love and service,

    Deborah Olenev CCH RSHom (NA)

  13. Dear Uma,
Thank you for your question. Ferrum metallicum is listed in bold under injuries or trauma to the shoulder. There are 17 remedies listed under this search, including well known trauma remedies such as Arnica, and Rhus toxicodendron. I have used Ferrum metallicum a few times for people with should injuries and it has been helpful.

I also did a search using the words tear or torn within five words of shoulder, and two remedies showed up strongly: Mezereum and Thiosinaminum. Thiosinaminum is interesting, because it is a very important remedy for helping heal scar tissue.

There are a number of constitutional remedies with the following wording: torn, ligaments, as if, shoulder. Here Sepia shows up and so does Nux vomica.

This is the best answer I can give, since I have not taken your case. I always surrender the final decision for a prescription to the Higher Power, or Inner Teacher, because the ego can make an argument for any remedy and defend it. That doesn’t mean the selection is correct.

Please keep in mind that shoulder injuries do take a long time to recover from even with the best treatment. Exercise is important.

This has got to be the best, most helpful article I’ve found on homeopathy I have read. Thank you, I feel more able to train in this field, have learned important safety guidance from what you have written; which is what is needed when treating members of the public and yourself.

    Dear Deborah,

I consulted several homeopaths for eczema, one of which prescribed me Pulsatilla 1M, which resulted in indescribable panic attacks, and the inability to leave home, an absolutely horrible experience.
Since then, I have consulted another homeopath who has found the right remedy to alleviate anxieties and panic attacks: cannabis 200c, 5 globules dry dose.

I took the remedy almost 5 weeks ago. I feel much better but I still do not feel completely free from my apprehensions … I still do not have much confidence in myself, panic attacks are rare and better controlled but there is still apprehension to move forward.
Should I still wait before repeating? And if I have to repeat, what advice do you recommend for the best way to take the cure?

Indeed the dry dose of cannabis indica stupefied me for 10 days … with desire to sleep, headache, laziness, tiredness, and few days of depression … I am particularly sensitive, I let you imagine the hell I experienced when I was prescribed ARG NIT 10M, ARS ALB 10M, then ACONIT 10M, dry dose, whole tube !!! 3 years in hell …
So is a diluted dose better, and if so, how?

Thank you in advance for your advice and for taking the time to read Deborah,
    Regards,
    Romain

    Hi Sir
My Five year old Son is diagnosed with ASD . Is there any remedy for that . He has delayed speech . Talk only one word and repetitive behaviour. Thnx

  15. Dear Sharad,
Since I have not taken your case, I can only give a semi educated guess to the answer to your question about macular edema. I had to look the symptom up as swelling or edema of the eyes. Many remedies showed up for this. Then I looked up swelling or edema of the eyeball itself. Some of the remedies that show up close to the top for these symptoms are:

Apis mellifica (which is a great remedy for swelling or edema in general)
    Sulphur
    Magnesium carbonicum
    Paris quadrifolia
    Spigelia
    Rhus toxicodendron
    and others.

It is a good idea for you to consult with a homeopath who can take your complete case and guide you in the management of your case.

    In love and service,

    Deborah Olenev CCH RSHom (NA)

  16. Dear Jaya,
Yes, you should stop taking the homeopathic remedy or remedies after the symptoms have gone. If you continue to take the remedies, the symptoms can return, which means you have taken too much. When you discontinue taking the remedy the symptoms should stop.

I wish you all the best.

should I stop taking homeopathic remedies immediately after the symptoms have gone? If not how long after the symptoms have disappeared should I continue?
    Thank you

  17. Dear Nikki,
Thank you for writing. I wish you success with your homeopathic studies. I am happy that you found this article and that it has been helpful to you. Most people underestimate the power of homeopathic remedies and way over prescribe them, or have a limited understanding of how to evaluate the response once a remedy has been taken. I hope you gain experience with this and become a good prescriber, if that is what you would like to do.

    In love and service,

    Deborah Olenev CCH RSHom (NA)

So pleased I found this article regarding administration of these medicines. I am interested in doing a homeopathy course in the future, so I purchased a helios basic 18’s and a miranda castro book. Had I not seen this and eager to try a remedy, I would’ve potentially just popped a dry remedy under my tongue as the guide recommends. I think your way is a much more gentle, sensible approach to putting anything new inside the body. Thank you for sharing x

  18. Dear Mavis,
Thank you for writing with your question. Some people administer the remedy dry under the tongue and some people dissolve it in water. This can be a matter of personal preference. I recommend dissolving the remedy in water, because I find that the reaction is often more gentle than taking the dry dose. Sometimes it is not necessary to take the remedy orally at all. Just holding the remedy, or putting it under the pillow for a certain amount of time is sufficient to bring you under the influence of the remedy, particularly if you are just treating an indisposition like seasickness.

I always consult my inner teacher (or higher power) regarding questions of how to take the remedy, how much of it to take and so forth, because my ego can guess at an answer, but my intuition has greater insight.

    In love and service,

    Deborah Olenev CCH RSHom (NA)

  19. Dear Pranali,
I am so sorry that you are having these symptoms. I repertorized what you mentioned here, but there is not enough to go on to finalize a prescription.

    Lachesis
    Sepia
    Aconiate
    Apis
    Lilium tigrinum
    Nux moschata
    Veratrum album

are some of the remedies that could be useful. Please work with a homeopath who can help chose a remedy to help you more precisely.

I hope that you recover soon from this condition.

  20. Dear Swati,
I cannot say whether a remedy will hold permanently or not. If the symptoms that the remedy helped return for a month or so, it may be an indication that the remedy has exhausted its action, and that you need to repeat.

Always repeat a remedy that has been helpful with great care, because you do not want to interrupt an active dose, as this can cause an unnecessary aggravation of symptoms. I hope that the dose you took will help you for a very long time

    In love and service,

    Deborah Olenev CCH RSHom (NA)

    • Swati on April 6, 2019 at 11:41 pm

Sure, thanks a ton Deborah.! I think you are right.. the remedy has helped after aggravation in achieving general well being now.. so am not repeating it in any form.

Can I ask one more thing related to my epilepsy query. Does the right homeopathic remedy given for this can cure the condition completely permanently? And does it take long time i mean years or it can happen in less time too…?You must have dealt with cases like this. Can you share your experience related to these cases.

  21. Dear Swati,
The remedy does not have to be under the pillow, for a pillow dose. Sometimes I have people just keep the remedy in their pocket, or hold onto it for a specified time. Even just having the remedy in close proximity, like on a bed stand is sufficient to bring you under its influence.

If you are feeling better, please do not do the pillow dose. Remember the rule: when there are signs of aggravation or amelioration of your symptoms or general well being, do not repeat the remedy in any form, as you do not want to interrupt an active doe.

Yes, homeopathy can help with epilepsy. There is a strong peculiar symptom here: that the epilepsy is only triggered with the child has acid reflux. I hope that the child recovers soon.

    • Swati on March 23, 2019 at 5:11 am

    Dear Deborah,
Am so grateful for your response. One thing though is still not clear to me.. How do I keep the remedy under my pillow? It was in liquid form and in bottle.. do I have to keep the small bottle as it is for half an hour under pillow? My doc gave me as it is few drops from the bottle without dilution. I have lower potencies of the silicea 1 M in pellets form. Will it help keeping that? Moreover, Now its been two weeks since I recovered..can I do it now?

On another note, I would like to ask one more question. Can a general epilepsy be treated with homeopathy? If EEG shows sharp generalised discharges and it triggers only when he had acid reflux kind of thing. Otherwise everything is normal. Here am referring to a 8-9 years old kid.

    Thanks a ton!
    Swati

  22. Dear Swati,
Thank you for writing. The potency of Silica 1M may have been too strong for you and possibly contributed to the strong illness that you had. Antibiotics interfere with the remedy in about 20% of cases, so the remedy may not have been affected at all by the pharmaceuticals that you took.

If you are very concerned that there was interference, what you can do is take a pillow dose of the remedy. What this means is that you can lie down on the remedy for thirty minutes. In this way you enter into the energetic field of the remedy, rather than take it into yourself. It can help stimulate your healing following this illness or setback, without the necessity of taking an oral dose.

I hope you are feeling much better now. and that this information helps.

    In love and service,

    Deborah Olenev CCH RSHom (NA)

  23. Dear Michael,
Please remember that homeopathic remedies are not vitamins or supplements. They are powerful healing agents that you should really use under the supervision of a homeopath. Understanding how to repeat remedies with homeopathy takes years of experience and also studying the classical literature of homeopathy.

Unless you understand homeopathic philosophy and posology, it is better for you not to use the remedies on your own.

I wish you all the best.

    In love and service,

    Deborah Olenev CCH RSHom (NA)

    Dear Deborah,
Thanks so much for your reply. I, infact couldnt resist giving paracetamol for the very high temperature which continued for 4 days. Even the doc had to give antibiotics and then only fever came down. Now am wondering how will this affect the dose of silicea 1m which my homeopath gave just 2 days before all this happened? I read it cant be repeated so often.. will the medicine not work upto its full potential? And if this is the case, how can we assess its effectiveness? Can you kindly throw some light on this.. I will be grateful.
    Thanks

    Hi,

I picked up some Phosphorus 30c and i didnt realise that it meant it is a homeopathic solution. I bought these for Gallstones, Joint pains etc. I see your directions above but is this how i do this in this circumstance? I was thinking your body needs a lot of phosphorus for its skeleton and cells, i was looking at another product which uses about 30 drops a day to get the correct amount in your body. I obviously do not understand homeopathy but i struggle with thinking how a few of the 30c tablets will help my body to fix what it needs to fix without taking them daily. Would waiting 7-8 weeks on a few tablets as suggested with these be the right thing to do as regards this or do i need to take these more often and more of them? Could you please advise, i have bought these now and i dont want to not use them because i feel they will be quite beneficial.

  24. Dear Mrs. Sechaud,
I am not familiar with the remedy Samarium Murray and have never prescribed it. You have prompted me to learn about it. The method of taking it that was recommended to you is not the way I would work, as a 200C dose should hold much longer than three weeks. I do not recommend ever taking remedies according to a fixed schedule, but observing your response and repeating with care when there is evidence of a relapse that has lasted about two weeks.

I hope that the remedy is helping you and that you have a full recovery from your illness.

    In love and service,

    Deborah

  25. Could you please give information why Samarium Murray 200c 7 grms of soft tablet has been given for first time use to be taken 1 tablet every 3 weeks but no instructions were given on how to take the dose with or without water or food etc .it would also be good some understanding of what this treatment does and what it’s given for etc .I am in recovery now after 6 weeks rest from bladder cancer removal and I have been diagnosed with ME,CFS and Lymphopenia if you could take time to offer information on this treatment .it would be very much appreciated to understand before taking the treatment.Thank you

  26. Dear Favi,
I am very sorry to hear about your sister’s accident. What an unfortunate thing to happen. She may need a number of remedies due to the various parts that have been injured.

Arnica montana is good to start with, as this addresses the trauma, bruising, muscle soreness, bleeding, pain and so forth.

Bellis perennis should also be considered, because this is good for the soft tissue injury that she sustained to the abdomen.

I would begin with these. Later she may need Rhus toxicodendron, Ruta and Symphytum.

I hope that your sister recovers quickly from this injury.

    In love and service,

    Deborah Olenev CCH RSHom (NA0

  27. Dear Swati,
It is normal after taking a homeopathic remedy that symptoms you are hoping to address with the remedy will aggravate or act up. This is a sign that the remedy has found the symptom that it needs to work on and is trying to push it on through. It is best not to take any pharmaceutical medicines, or other homeopathic remedies, because they can potentially interfere with the healing process. Here is a link to an article on on How to Take Homeopathic Remedies.

I hope you have a good response to the Silica 1M.

    In love and service,

    Deborah Olenev CCH RSHom (NA0

  28. Dear Dorene,
I am sorry about your son’s injury. The best remedy for injuries to the wrist is Ruta graveolens. He can take a single dose of a 30C or 200C of this remedy. Please read the article on How to Take Homeopathic Remedies.

I hope your son recovers soon.
